Climate Change Summit
On Monday, September 23, 2019, world leaders and officials from dozens of countries across the world congregated at the United Nations Climate Summit in New York, to discuss the urgent need to reduce emissions, and the harrowing effects of climate change.
We are all familiar with the extreme and dangerous weather patterns, more recently, the devastating hurricanes in Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, and wildfires plaguing the West Coast of the United States.
We are also becoming increasingly aware of the politics that play a role in addressing climate change, and that not all countries and world leaders understand the consequences of climate change, or are willing to take steps to reduce emissions.
Among the world leaders, politicians, UN employees and climate activists in attendance at the Summit, there was one 16 year old Swedish girl who blew us all away. Greta Thunberg, a teenage environmental activist took the world by storm, calling out our world leaders, and to be franc, filled our hearts with a little panic.
She states “For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away?”. Her emotional plea has a bone chilling effect as she cites frightening statistics from scientific studies over the last 30 years, and notes the collapse of ecosystems resulting from climate change. She tells world leaders “How dare you?”.
Environmental Impacts of Fashion
As the fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters in the world, Greta’s plea has had a huge impact on us. The water used to produce garments are filled with toxic substances that make their way into rivers and oceans, leading to harmful effects on marine life and people living near the water. Lead, mercury, fertilizer and many other substances contaminate runoff and evaporation waters, and it doesn’t end there. The fashion industry also consumes a massive quantity of fresh water, leaving countries like India with little to no drinking water. Cotton irrigation channels fresh water from major water sources, creating economic collapses and leaving communities with no drinking water.
Being aware there is a problem is the first step. Do some research and familiarize yourself with the negative effects certain industries have on the environment. Whether it’s the fashion industry, food industry or your day to day activities, we can all make small changes to make a difference.
Amaiò has teamed up with Drip by Drip, who is committed to giving back to communities whose clean water has been negatively affected by the textile and fashion industry. Their mission is to engage in industrial water waste projects in countries that are directly impacted by the global textile industry. Their solutions are rooted in education, innovation, and fieldwork.
As a sustainable fashion brand, we encourage all of you do gain the knowledge and take your first step towards creating a healthier planet, and create a healthy future for Greta and the next generation.
